Frequently Asked Questions

And their answers
  • What is OnEdit?

Internet technologies have chipped away at the barrier between web applications and desktop applications. With OnEdit the barrier can be selectively broken. Users can now edit files that reside online, using locally installed applications.

  • What types of applications are best for OnEdit

Ideally suited for online document-creation or document-management, files are transparently downloaded from a web-location and edited on the local machine. When the user then saved the changes made, the document is uploaded again without user interaction.

  • What backend systems does OnEdit support?

The download mechanism for OnEdit is a simple HTTP Get, and the upload mechanism is an HTTP Post. OnEdit can connect to any backend that can implement a document get/store mechanism based on these principles. OnEdit comes out of the box with a secure PHP backend that can be used as is, or as an example.

  • How is OnEdit secured?

OnEdit uses secure private/public key authentication. An end-user is requested to deny, allow-once or allow-always the up- and download facilities, using OnEdit on a per-site basis. In the area of viruses, sending MSWord documents via email or up and downloading them manually to a web-based document management system poses the identical risks as using OnEdit. The solution here lies in having proper virus scanning on local machines and the server to weed out infected files.

  • How much does OnEdit cost?

Javeline offers OnEdit in three different packages:

    • Per domain cost US 9.00
    • Per server cost US 9.00 and it will be IP bound.
    • Developer License cost US ,000.00 (free deployment on any number of domains or servers, not for resale services).
  • What operating systems are supported for OnEdit?

OnEdit supports Windows 2000 and higher, and Internet Explorer. FireFox support for Windows is underway and expected in August 2007.

  • How will OnEdit be distributed?

OnEdit will be available for download from the Javeline Shop.

  • How is OnEdit installed?

OnEdit is a browser plug-in, and requires a one time approval from the user to install itself, much like Adobe Flash and other browser plugins.

Edit online files.

OnEdit provides a user the tool to edit online
documents with common desktop applications such
as Microsoft Word or Excel. The user merely clicks on a document in the web application, and the document is opened in a corresponding desktop application on the computer. When finished, the user saves the document, and the web application uploads the file transparently to the server. This technology helps developers overcome the barrier between web and desktop applications offering integration with any editor available on the client. more...

No files are too large or small for OnEdit. The server sets the limits to the size and number of files that it can transfer. As a plug-in, OnEdit needs no installation. All a user needs to do is download the file from Javeline website and the rest takes care of itself.

OnEdit is well-suited for bigger corporations. The capability for many different people to access the same document for edits and revisions is ideal for collaboration. Think of a web application for project management. Files that are uploaded can easily be updated by any member of the project team with edit permissions.
